Scholastic Standing Committee Petition

In exceptional cases, and subject to the approval of the BGS Scholastic Standing Committee and Associate Provost of ASFCCE, students may request exceptions to degree requirements prescribed by the Bachelor of General Studies program or by the General Faculty of the University of Rhode Island. These requests tend to fall into (2) two categories: General Education and University Regulations. To petition these requirements, students should obtain a Bachelor of General Studies Scholastic Standing Petition form and follow the general guidelines below. Forms are available in the Admissions and Advising Office, Room 245, Shepard Building.

  • For consideration of General Education requirements:

File a petition to the Bachelor of General Studies Scholastic Standing Committee. In all cases the petition must be pre-approved by the BGS Coordinator for consideration by the Scholastic Standing Committee. If the petition is for a substitution of a course not approved for general education by the BGS program, the petition must also be approved by the chair of the department in which the course being petitioned is taught.
  • For consideration of University Regulations:

File a petition to the Bachelor of General Studies Scholastic Standing Committee. In all cases the petition must be pre-approved by the BGS Coordinator for consideration by the Scholastic Standing Committee.

Scholastic Standing Committee Petition Instructions

  • Obtain a BGS Scholastic Standing Petition from the Admissions and Advising Office, Room 245, Shepard Building or online in .pdf format.
  • Specify clearly the exact waiver, exception, or substitution you wish to have the committee consider.
  • State the grounds on which your petition is based. Attach any supporting documentation (ex: syllabus of courses, photo copies of course descriptions or course outlines, memos of support). It is recommended that you review the petition with your assigned academic advisor.
  • Submit your petition to the BGS Coordinator for approval and signature.
  • If the petition is for a substitution of a course, not approved for general education by the BGS Program, the petition must also be approved by the chair of the department in which the course being petitioned is taught.

For example, if you are petitioning to satisfy a Foreign Language and Culture requirement with courses that have not been approved by the BGS Program, ask for support from the chair of the department in which the non-approved course is taught. He or she should write a statement that in his/her opinion the course is appropriate to satisfy the requirement.

Return the petition form to the Admissions and Advising Office, Room 245. You will be notified by mail of the committee's decision.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are petitioning for the waiver of a requirement, you need only secure the support of the BGS Coordinator prior to Scholastic Standing Committee consideration.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Having a requirement waived by the Scholastic Standing Committee does NOT reduce the total number of credits required for graduation.

Program Exception Petition

In exceptional cases, and subject to the approval of the BGS Coordinator, students may request to modify a curriculum requirement stipulated by the BGS Program. These requests tend to fall into (3) three categories: requests for course waiver, for course substitution and for requirement exceptions.  To petition these requirements, students should obtain a BGS Program Exception form and follow the general guidelines below.  Forms are available in the Admissions and Advising Office, Room 245, Shepard Building or online in .pdf format.

Program Exception Petition instructions

  1. Obtain a BGS Program Exception Petition from the Admissions and Advising Office, Room 245, Shepard Building. Specify clearly the exact waiver, exception, or substitution you wish to be considered.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Having a requirement waived by the BGS Program does NOT reduce the total number of credits required for graduation.
