IN HIDING, a multimedia performance piece

March 19 & 20, 2010 at 8:00 pm

By Deirdre McCarthy MFA ’10 (Theatre Performance and Society Rhode Island College) Paff Auditorium URI Providence Campus

IN HIDING is a multi media performance piece based on the oral histories gathered from women fleeing Domestic Violence. It is the culmination of a year and a half of research and interviewing with the purpose of giving voice to a population that for a number of reasons, the foremost being personal safety, are unable to speak for themselves. The title implies both the reality that abuse happens most often behind closed doors and the women are forced to cover or mask both the physical and the emotional scars. It is also true that in many cases those who leave abusive relationships must go into hiding or protective custody until the abuser, is behind bars and even then safety is not assured due to the network of support for the abuser and the relative isolation of the abused.

The research and the performance piece is not just about telling the stories of abuse; it is also about giving these women an identity beyond that of “Victim” or “Survivor”. It is about regaining their humanity with all the good parts and the ugly parts so that we as a society can recognize that beyond the horrible statistics and numbers, there are real people who deserve our help, respect and above all, our recognition. We will be examining what is visible to the outside world, what is invisible and what is there right in front of our eyes, but we choose to dismiss.

This production will make much use of projection and visual images in an effort to reach the audience with more than just rhetoric. Spoken word will be used in conjunction with powerful lighting and sound effects to create a message that transcend traditional language. The cast is made up of an ensemble cast of powerful women who take their responsibility as the voices of the voiceless very seriously.

The production was researched, created and directed by Deirdre McCarthy in partial fulfillment of the MFA in Theatre Performance and Society at Rhode Island College. The cast includes Stephanie Carey, Tina Do, Candace Sampson, Colleen Farrell, Nina Genatossio, Kelli Noonan, Kristina Drager and Valerie Westgate, students from Rhode Island College. The research and performance for this project are funded and produced through the URI Providence Campus Urban Arts and Culture Program and Student Government Board.

The performance is free of charge. Donations will be accepted to support Women’s Shelters.
