EPSILON RHO CHAPTER ALPHA SIGMA LAMBDA
CONTINUING EDUCATION HONOR SOCIETY

ARTICLE I - NAME AND PURPOSE

Section 1 - Name

The name of the University of Rhode Island College of Continuing Education (the “College') chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society shall be “Epsilon Rho Chapter”.


Section 2 - Purpose

The Chapter has as its primary goal advocacy for excellence in adult education through promotion of the College of Continuing Education.

ARTICLE II - MEMBERSHIP

Members shall be elected to this Chapter by a Membership Committee in accordance with the standards prescribed in Sections 3 and 4 of Article II of The Constitution of Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society, a copy of which shall at all times be attached to these BY-LAWS and incorporated herein by reference.

ARTICLE III - COMMITTTEES

Section 1 - Executive Committee

An Executive Committee, consisting of the Chapter's elected officers, an Academic Advisor from the College of Continuing Education, and the chairpersons of any standing committees, shall conduct the business of the Chapter between meetings.


Section 2 - Membership Committee

The Dean, Chapter Advisor, and three student members appointed each year by the President and/or the Executive Committee, shall constitute a Membership Committee for the purpose of identifying those individuals to be invited to join the Chapter for that particular academic year.
Section 3 Nominating Committee

In February of each year the President and/or the Executive Committee shall appoint a committee for the nomination of Candidates for the Chapter's offices.
Section 4 Other Committees

The President and/or the Executive Committee shall appoint such other committees as may be deemed necessary or desirable from time to time to further the aims of the chapter.

ARTICLE IV - OFFICERS

Section 1 - Election of Officers

Officers shall be elected or reelected at the March meeting every two years by written ballot of those members present and eligible to vote, candidates for such election having been placed in nomination by the Nominating Committee.


Section 2 - Number of Officers

The membership will elect the following student officers:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer

Section 3 - Terms of Office

Elected officers shall assume their duties at the Installation of Officers to be held in April of each year in conjunction with the Initiation Ceremonies. All officers will serve until the next annual initiation. All officers are eligible to serve consecutive terms not to exceed four (4) years.

ARTICLE V - DUTIES OF OFFICERS

Section 1 - President

The President shall serve as the presiding officer of the Chapter and as a member ex-officio of all committees. The President shall exercise the usual functions pertaining to that office and such other duties as may from time to time be required by the Executive Committee.

Section 2 - Vice President

The Vice President shall, in the absence or disability of the President or in case of any vacancy in the office of President, exercise the powers and perform the duties of the President and such other duties as may from time to time be required of the Vice President by the President and/or the Executive Committee.


Section 3 - Secretary

The Secretary shall keep accurate minutes of the proceedings of the Chapter and of the Executive Committee. The Secretary shall notify members of their election, keep a roll of the membership, issue proper notice for all meetings of the Chapter and of the Executive Committee, have custody of the Chapter's seal, and generally perform the usual duties pertaining to the office of Secretary and such other duties as may from time to time be required of the Secretary by the President and/or the Executive Committee.


Section 4 - Treasurer

The Treasurer shall collect and receive all monies due the Chapter and shall have the custody of all funds. The Treasurer shall pay, after proper approval, all bills and indebtedness of the Chapter and shall have authority to sign checks for such payments. The Treasurer shall keep regular and correct accounts of all financial transactions of the Chapter in books belonging to the Chapter. Said books may be audited annually by a committee of Chapter members as stated in Section 5 of Article V of The Constitution of Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society. The Treasurer will, at each Chapter meeting, make a full report of the Chapter's financial matters. The Treasurer shall perform such other duties as the nature of the office may require or as may be required by the President and/or the Executive Committee.

(Note: The Secretary and Treasurer confer with a member of the University staff in the performance of duties concerning the names and addresses of members, the mailing of meeting notices, custody of the Chapter's seal, and the collection or disbursements of funds as these are under the authority of and maintained by the University. ARTICLE VI - MEETINGS

Section 1 - Annual Meeting

An Annual Meeting shall be held on a date within the two weeks immediately following commencement of the fall semesters.

Section 2 - Regular Meetings

Meetings shall be held regularly during the academic year . The day, time, and location of these meetings shall be set at the Annual Meeting for the ensuing academic year.

Section 3 - Other Meetings

All other meetings shall be called by the President and/or Executive Committee.

Section 4 - Notice of Meetings

The Secretary shall notify the membership of all meeting dates (other than Regular Meetings) by mailing such notice to each member at his or her mailing address of record at least fifteen (15) days prior to the meeting dates.

Section 5 - Voting

Any Member in attendance at a meeting and in good standing pursuant to Section 2 of Article VII of these BY-LAWS will be eligible to vote on any motion.
Section 6 Conduct of_Meetings

All meetings shall be conducted in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order. Should any such rules conflict with the provisions of these BY-LAWS , the provisions of these BY-LAWS shall prevail.

ARTICLE VII - MISCELLANEOUS

Section 1 - Fiscal Year

The fiscal year of the Chapter shall commence on July 1 and end on June 30.

Section 2 - Annual Dues

In order to be a member in good standing eligible to votes each member must be current in the payment of annual dues.

ARTICLE VIII - AMENDMENTS

These BY-LAWS may be added to, amended or repealed at any meeting of the Chapter by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the members present and voting; provided, however, that in the notice of the meeting it is stated that a proposal to add to, amend or repeal said BY-LAWS is to be submitted to said meeting.
