Aging of Society: Lifespan Health Focus
"Aging and Health: Promoting Wellness Across the Lifespan”
The three faculty hired into this cluster will be filling positions with broad characterizations of these faculty lines: (1) health economics, (2) health care policy, and (3) health disparities and the gendered, racial, and sociocultural life course determinants of health.
As part of this initiative, a Faculty Fellows in Aging and Health has been created for faculty currently affiliated with aging and those to be hired under this cluster. The Fellows program will underscore the identification of faculty with the aging and health focus, support their scholarship, and solidify their ongoing commitment in this area.
The position descriptions below indicate the specific focus of each faculty line.
- Health Economics - This faculty position will be held by an individual with a PhD in economics, with a particular emphasis on health care policy, health promotion, or health behavior issues as they relate to aging and the life course. Preference will be given to a person with experience and skills related to cost effectiveness and cost benefit analysis of health care-related interventions. Such a background will be increasingly important for the development of large-scale NIH grants targeted on health promotion interventions.
- Health Care Policy - This faculty position will be filled by a PhD in Political Science, Public Policy, Human Development, Public Health, or related discipline whose primary research and teaching focus is on health care policy at the national and/or international level and with a concentration on issues involving aging and the life course. In addition to their research expertise, this faculty member’s instructional work will be linked to courses currently taught at the graduate level in the Master’s Degrees in Human Development and Family Studies, Business Administration, and Public Policy, as well as the Doctorate in Nursing Practice.
- Health Disparities and Life Course Determinants of Health - The recent growth in the use of a life-course perspective on aging-incorporating the understanding that the experience of being an older adult is heavily influenced by, and interacts with, such forces as racial discrimination, gender bias, sexual orientation, income levels, educational opportunities, and socioeconomic disparities in general over the lifespan-provides a third focus for this cluster hire initiative. We will seek applicants with a PhD in Sociology, Anthropology, Human Development, Gender and Women’s Studies, Public Health, or related field with an emphasis on aging and the life course in the context of social forces that shape and interact with it.
