"A collaborative for Islamic and Mediterranean Studies at URI"

The three faculty hired into this cluster will be part of a university-wide interdisciplinary initiative, working together with colleagues across the University to create interdisciplinary teaching and research opportunities for Islamic and Mediterranean Studies. The collaborative for Islamic and Mediterranean Studies at URI will underscore the identification of faculty with an Islamic and/or Mediterranean focus, support their scholarship, and solidify their ongoing commitment in this area.

The position descriptions below indicate the specific focus of each faculty member to be hired.

  1. Islamic Religion and Politics - The hire will have a PhD in Religious Studies, Near-Eastern Studies, or a relevant degree that combines Islamic Thought with social scientific analysis. The candidate will offer courses in Islam as a religion, as well as courses in the politics of Islamic nations and movements.

  2. Modern Standard Arabic - Faculty will have a PhD in Arabic or Middle Eastern Studies, Arabic literature, Arabic linguistics, or a field involving advanced knowledge of the Arabic language. This person will have native or near-native fluency in Arabic and English and experience in teaching Modern Standard Arabic.

  3. Islamic History and Culture - This position will have a specialty in an area of the Mediterranean basin. This person's work will focus on Islamic cultural history, including material culture. Teaching load will consist of introductory courses in the history of Islam as well as more specialized courses.
