BACKGROUND CHECKS AND FINGERPRINTING
The URI Police Department can no longer provide standard background checks (computerized criminal records checks) for student interns or potential employees unless they are required by Rhode Island statute. At this time, only paid employees of schools and health care facilities are required by statute to have a national record check. A national record check would be completed by taking fingerprints.
If you are required to have a state BCI or record check, that is provided by the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office BCI Unit at 150 South Main Street Providence.
Some background checks for employment require fingerprinting. If the applicant has their own fingerprint cards and they are returning the cards to their employer, there is no fee for an officer to take your prints. Please call 874-4910 for this service.
If the URI Police Department has to send the prints to the Rhode Island Bureau of Criminal Identification, there is a $36.00 fee for this service. Checks should be made out to the University of Rhode Island Police Department. An appointment is required. Please contact Officer Debra Sheldon at 874-5262 for an appointment.
