The men and women of the University of Rhode Island Police Department welcome you to our web site. It is our intent that this web site provides you with information about our department and the services that we provide in the furtherance of our mission.
The URI Police Department works closely with the other divisions of the Department of Public Safety as well as other academic departments and the Office of Student Life, Student Affairs, and Housing and Residential Life. We strive to further the philosophy of community policing-we need the assistance of all the members of the URI community in solving problems and keeping our campuses safe.
URI Police Officers currently patrol as unarmed officers with full arrest powers. All of our officers are graduates of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy and receive mandatory annual police training. We investigate and prosecute crimes that occur on University property as well as traffic accidents and traffic related violations.
Most of our staff work out of our police station at 85 Briar Lane on the Kingston campus. We maintain patrols on the Kingston campus 24/7 and answer calls for service at the Narragansett Bay Campus as well as the W. Alton Jones campus. Our Providence campus is manned by a University Police Lieutenant who oversees a security force there.
We strive to be proactive through our various methods of patrol such as vehicle patrol, foot patrol and bicycle patrol. Our officers are involved in community relations projects such as “Blues and Cues” and “P.A.L.S.” and we offer a student internship program for those students interested in law enforcement.
Please check out the various pages of our web site and contact us with any suggestions or concerns.
The primary mission of the University of Rhode Island Police Department is to provide a safe environment where students, faculty, employees, and visitors can all come together for the purpose of educating the minds and enriching the lives of those who choose to be a part of our community. To help achieve these goals, the officers of our department will perform their duties efficiently and fairly, with compassion, wisdom, and a sense of justice.
While enforcement of federal, state, and local laws are an important part of any police officer's duty, this department will strive to adopt a community policing philosophy where members of the campus community are encouraged to interact with the department's officers in a pro-active manner. This will afford an opportunity for open communication which will assist in our crime prevention and enforcement endeavors, which will ultimately help create a safe campus environment.
The officers of this department will always perform their duties in a professional manner, adhering to the principals of the Law Enforcement Officers Code of Ethics and recognizing and respecting the diversity of the University Community.
The department is committed to providing its officers an environment where there are ample opportunities for self actualization and professional growth. The department will strive to provide all employees with effective leadership and supervision, as well as to provide the training and equipment necessary for the officers of the department to successfully carry out this mission.
