URI Pharmacists Pedal for a Cure
On June 1, 2014 the quad adjacent to the College of Pharmacy building on URI’s Kingston Campus was transformed into the start/finish line for the 2014 Ocean State Tour de Cure. The annual event raises money and advances the mission of the American Diabetes Association: preventing and curing diabetes and improving the lives of people affected by diabetes. Similar events are held in states across the U.S. In 2013, 65,000 cyclists participated in 89 events across the country and raised over $26 million.
The 2014 Ocean State Tour de Cure drew 530 cyclists, including the College of Pharmacy’s team, the URxI doxyCYCLERS. The team of students, faculty, alumni and friends cycled different routes—from 7 to 100 miles—and raised $4,300 for the ADA. They held several fundraisers including a spin-a-thon and doxyCYCLER t-shirt sale to help support student team members achieve their fund raising goals.
Pharmacists, students, and alumni from the College of Pharmacy helped raise diabetes awareness throughout the day and volunteers from the URI Pharmacy Outreach program were at the finish line to educate as well.
