2004 Student Employee Award Recipient

Douglas Reed - “My work experiences have definitely contributed to my personal growth,”said Doug Reed. He added, “Working at the Cancer Prevention Research Center (CPRC) has helped me to become more responsible. Now instead of only balancing time for my school work I have to make time for my job.”Doug Reed has nothing to fear here as he has skillfully tied a perfect academic record (4.0 grade point average) with an outstanding track record of three years service at the CPRC. Doug, a Philosophy major in his senior year, has been gathering valuable data over the phone at the CPRC where he has won the respect of his peers and the commendation of his supervisors. Doug has also been an Orientation Leader, a Teaching Assistant for Philosophy 205, and is a Peer Mentor through University College.

2004 Student Leadership Award Recipients

Robert Kubica - Robert is a senior International Business major and Leadership Studies minor, holding a 3.69 GPA, from Warwick, Rhode Island. In his freshman year Rob was selected as an Orientation leader, and over the past several years he has expanded to his current role as Student Coordinator of Orientation 2004. His leadership and involvement in the College of Business are equally impressive, serving on the Business Advisory Council, Student Advisory Council, and as a URI 101 instructor/mentor. Rob’s leadership is also seen in Barlow Hall where he serves as a Resident Assistant. Athletics has always played an important role in Rob’s life. His leadership on the court is evident as a member of the Men’s Volleyball team where he has served as Captain and Treasurer. Last year Rob studied abroad in France, walked on to the Marseille Superior de Commerce basketball team, and helped lead them to the Championship.

Rachel Poirier - Rachel is a senior majoring in political science with a 3.39 GPA. She is a member and President of the URI Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Her Habitat work has taken her away from URI to Guatemala to build homes. She has served as Vice-President of Speakeasy, conference coordinator for Mothers Against Drunk Driving RI, and Resident Assistant in Barlow Hall. In addition, she has successfully planned a benefit concert for AIDS Project Rhode Island and Until the Cure. Rachel was a founding member of Zeta Epilson Tau Alpha and of After Hours, an a cappella group. She has also held membership in Students for Social Change and Phi Eta Sigma. Rachel views college as “a time when you figure out your place in the world.

Kirsten Olson –Kirsten is from Gorham, Maine, and carries a 3.4 GPA as a senior majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Leadership Studies. As Captain of the Softball team, Kirsten spends many hours working with the team. Kirsten also works for the betterment of all athletes. She was appointed the student representative to the steering committee for NCAA re-certification, was selected as the student-athlete representative to the Director of Athletics search committee, is a founding member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), having served as Corresponding Secretary and is the current President. Kirsten was selected as URI’s representative for the Atlantic 10 Conference SAAC. Kirsten’s involvement and presence can be felt beyond the athletic complex. She was a founding member of the ZETA sorority, is a member of the Peer Advocates, and was installed as a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society.

2004 Team Excellence Award Recipients

Adams/Browning Resident Assistant Staff –This team exemplifies the role of not only Resident Assistants but also the model of effective teamwork. “The Adams/Browning Team is a team whose members are aligned with a sense of purpose, feel a challenge in their task, have a strong sense of camaraderie, feel responsibility for the buildings and their residents, and experience growth both as members of the team and in their personal lives.”They collaborated to implement a mission for their Residence Halls that they have revisited since its creation. Their mission provides them with a “sense of purpose as well as a means to keep them focused, productive, and operating cohesively as a team.”In line with their mission they have goals that they strive for as Resident Assistants. These goals were created after a series of round-table discussions. What makes this team even more accomplished is that the Adams/Browning Staff is comprised not only of first time Resident Assistants but also a new(to the University) Residence Hall Director and Graduate Hall Director
