Steve Schuh

Steve Schuh - Steve Schuh is from West Kingston, RI, and is a senior majoring in Human Development and Family Studies, with a concentration in Leadership Studies. Steve has been the Challenge Course Manager for the Center for Student Leadership Development since July, 2009. He held the positions of president and fundraising chair of Sigma Pi. He has served as a Student Organization Leadership Consultant, on Union Board, in the Student Programming Office. Steve feels that working at the Challenge Course has been the most empowering experience of his life. He tailors each group’s experience to its objectives, and he receives a great sense of gratification from watching groups grow and achieve their goals under his guidance.

Matt Burak

Mathew Burak – is a senior from North Easton, MA. As a Chemical Engineering major with a track in Biology he maintains a 3.94 GPA. He is leaving his mark on campus not only with an outstanding educational experience but also as the Captain of the Men’s Swimming Team. Matt has been described as someone who takes on a quiet leadership role with his work ethic and his values serving as a source of strength for the team. He is also a member of the American Chemical Engineering Society, been honored for having the top GPA for a male athlete, a member of a top ranked club team that holds 9 national records and Matt owes 5 of them personally! In his interview, Matt was asked why he didn’t leave when the team was dropped from the athletic department. He responded that he had developed too many bonds not only with the members of the Swim Team but also in his academic work and felt he owed URI for all it had given him.

Brandon Brown

Brandon Brown – a senior, is a Sociology and Political Science double major with a minor in African American Studies. Brandon has been noted for saying “I don’t do what I do to get recognized, but for the goal of making things better.” Through his past work with the Rhode Island Children’s Crusade, the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, and the Rhode Island state Senate offices, he is well on his way to making a positive difference at the community and state-wide level. As a graduate of Central Falls High School, he has actively given back to that community through mentoring and tutoring students. As Brandon described his current leadership efforts, he stated that he works to “invest his time in the growth of others” and this is clearly demonstrated by his work with the Cumberland Youth Commission. As a testimony to his dedication to URI and his numerous leadership endeavors, Brandon has served a two-year term as the student representative to the RI Board of Governors. Brandon states that his role model is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and it is clear to anyone who has a conversation with him that he also has the power to inspire others to heed the call to service, action, and positive change.

URI SMAC

SMAC Students for a More Accessible Campus- Composed of both disabled and able-bodied students, SMAC, Students for a More Accessible Campus, is a student organized group that raises awareness of the difficulties that disabled students face daily on a college campus. Founded by Krista Simeone in 2008, SMAC purpose is to both raise this awareness of the need for a more accessible campus but also to raise money for Disability Services at the University of Rhode Island. Through their efforts of raising awareness, SMAC believes that the university campus will become a safer and more accessible environment for those with varying abilities.
