Recommendation: If you're running Windows Vista, your computer will run Windows 7 better. Aside from the interface changes, Windows 7's
popularity is mostly due to the fact that is requires less resources than Vista.
If you're not certain what you should do, Microsoft has a Windows 7
Upgrade Advisor and we have a checklist below that will
be helpful.
RC's Windows 7 checklist
- Backup your data...you should be doing this regularly anyways!
- Some major applications cannot be transferred, others may be buggy if you upgrade without formatting first. Look for
your CDs to re-install them!
- Device drivers? Even though Windows 7 will pick up most of your drivers automatically if you're connected to the internet, check
for driver availability before an upgrade (depending on which platform you purchase, remember to look for 32bit or 64bit).
(Dell -
Lenovo
- HP - Compaq
- Acer
- Toshiba
- Gateway
- Asus)
- Run Upgrade / or Format and run full install. You have the option to load the disk in your current version of Windows or boot from
it and wipe your old installation and start from scratch. Running the upgrade is easier, but formatting and running full installation
will result in none of the bugs coming through from your original Vista installation.
- What about all those cool free apps you had your computer before? Ninite.com
has a utility that lets you build a list of the most popular applications to be installed. The most recent version of each application
will be installed automatically, thus not consuming 5-8 hours of your time you can never get back! (RC's Ninite list: Firefox, iTunes,
Reader, Malwarebytes, Flash, Java, .Net, Silverlight, CCleaner, Defraggler)
Uugghhhhh, This is too complicated!
If you'd rather pay an expert to get it done right the first time, RAM Computers can backup your documents and reload your computer for
you for $55.00 service charge (this fee will be waived for "No-Touch" Warranty and
RAMCare customers).
