The University of Rhode Island Club Sports program consists of 15 competitive, collegiate club teams. Each team is organized and managed by students with guidance from the Coordinator of Club Sports. Coaches, in most cases, are selected by team members and perform without monetary compensation, unless funds are raised by the individual team specifically for that purpose. Team members are required to pay yearly dues which help to offset the cost of team travel, equipment, uniforms and to cover officiating expenses.

FAQ

What is the difference between a club team and a Varsity program?
The Club Sports program is partially funded through student activity fees. Additional funding is derived from membership dues, fund-raising events and activities as well as alumni and corporate contributions. Another difference is that most club coaches are not employees of the University. Coaches salaries are entirely paid for by fundraising dollars. Many of our programs successfully compete against varsity intercollegiate NCAA programs.

Who do you play?
University of Rhode Island Club Sports teams participate in a number of leagues and associations that operate under the direction of each respective sports national governing body. URI competes against recognized intercollegiate club and varsity programs. Such teams include: Army, Navy, West Virginia, Boston University, Connecticut, Yale, Brown, and Dartmouth. In addition, many of our club sport teams travel throughout New England and nationally to compete. In the past our teams traveled to: Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Charleston, SC; Reno, NV; Oakridge, TN; Baltimore, MD and State College, PA to name a few.

Many of our programs have received regional and/or national recognition including: Equestrian, Men's Ice Hockey, Women's Ice Hockey, Men's Lacrosse, Women's Lacrosse, Roller Hockey, Women's Rugby, Sailing, and Men's Volleyball

Are there tryouts to play on a club sport team?
Limitations may be imposed on membership due to lack of facility space and/or time. In addition, it is recognized that only so many team members can realistically take part in a competitive contest at one-time.
