ACHA Women’s DI First Ranking
URI tops the Division

2012-11-27

URI ranked #1 in the first Ranking

University of Rhode Island Gets Top Spot in ACHA Women’s DI ranking #1:

In what is already shaping up to be a very competitive division this year, The University of Rhode Island, with 8 overall first place votes has taken atop of the D-1 Women’s first ranking. Rhode Island has started the 2012-2013 season as the only remaining undefeated team with an 11-0 start.  Rhode Island was able to muscle out three big wins at the Showcase Tournament in Chicago over Grand Valley State, Ohio State, and Michigan State, while only allowing one goal in all three games.  They then finished the first ranking period with a grueling two game home and home sweep over last year’s defending National Champions, Northeastern University with a 2-1 overtime thriller victory on the road and then skated to 3-1 hard fought ECWHL battle on their home ice.  Robert Morris is ranked 2nd with a 14-1 mark, the only blemish being an upset minded Colorado State which skated to a 3-2 victory over the Eagles on their home ice. Ranked 3rd is Liberty which was also undefeated as well going into the last weekend of rankings, only to split with the University of Minnesota, last year’s national runner up, with two highly competitive games, Liberty finishes the first ranking with a 9-1-0-0 ACHA record.  The 4th ranked University of Michigan has certainly surprised some this year with their 7-1-1-1 start. After suffering an OT loss and another loss to the hands of Grand Valley State to open their schedule, they have since rebounded and also went undefeated in Chicago at the Showcase beating Wisconsin, Colorado State, and University of Colorado and then last weekend took a two game sweep over there in state rivals “STATE” to close out the ranking period.  Rounding out the top five is last year’s National Champions Northeastern University.  Playing Liberty tough till the end and fighting URI in two tightly contested battles, along with a 6-2-0-1 start has earned them the five ranking.  Rounding out the top ten would be Michigan State at 6th, Grand Valley with two big wins early in the year over Michigan is ranked 7th, Miami University is 8th, Adrian College is 9th, and Minnesota rounds out the top ten with a big win over Liberty.  Ohio State, Colorado State, Wisconsin, University of Massachusetts, and Vermont finish the top 15.

In what looks to be a very exciting and competitive year leading to the National Tournament in the Nation’s Capital is certainly shaping up to be a wide open tournament.

In this weekend games we have the University of Minnesota heading east to play the undefeated Rhody Rams on Friday and Sunday and sandwiched in the middle is a game with Northeastern.  Number two Robert Morris travels to play two against Michigan State and Grand Valley hosts Miami for two as well. Liberty plays host to the University of Colorado for three games, and UMASS and Northeastern face off in big ECWHL battle.
