Q. Who is eligible to purchase a Rec Pass Membership?

A. Due to the size of the URI Recreation facilities, only URI Student; Faculty, Staff, Alumni and respective spouses are eligible to purchase a membership. Community members are allowed to purchase a Tootell Aquatic Center (TAC) Pass. During summer months when the majority of URI Students are not in session, we do allow the community to purchase a Rec Pass Membership.

 

Q. Do I need to purchase a Membership at the Mackal Fitness Center to use the facility if I am a URI Staff Member or Professor?

A. Yes, you may purchase a Rec Pass Membership (Mackal-Keaney-Tootell) or a TAC Pool Pass. URI Students who are registered as matriculating students at the Kingston campus are automatically assessed the Recreation Fee per semester on their tuition bill.

 

Q. What do I get with my Rec Pass Membership?

A. When you purchase a Rec Pass Membership that entitles the bearer to the Indoor Basketball Courts, Indoor Track, Mackal Fitness Center; Tootell Gymnasiums and Tootell Aquatic Center during Open Rec Hours. Please check out the weekly open rec schedule for each activity area or call the Rec Hotline at 874-4343.

 

Q. Why can't we use Keaney Gymnasium?

A. Keaney Gymnasium has been designated as a Varsity Athletic facility and is used for special events.

 

Q. Is my family able to use the recreation facilities?

A. Respective spouses and children (ages 17 - 22) are eligible to purchase a Rec Pass Membership provided that the Students; Faculty; Staff; Alumni has joined.

 

Q. Where am I able to park when visiting the facilities?

A. The designated parking lot for Visitors, Tootell Aquatic and Rec Pass members (non-URI Students) is located adjacent to the Boss Ice Arena and Beck Baseball field. URI Students must comply with URI Parking Services regulations. Parking in any other located is subject to ticketing and/or towing. Patrons must adhere to all URI Parking & Information Services Policies.

 

Q. Are locker and towel service available?

A. Yes, Recreational Services provides (permanent, assigned and daily), locks and towel services for members. Please Note: Locker, lock and towel services are not available to daily swim pool pass holders. Purchases can be made at the Rec Service Center in Mackal Lobby.

 

Q. How many laps to a mile on the Indoor Track?

A. It take 8 laps for a mile following the center yellow line on the Indoor Track.

 

Q. How can I obtain a membership?

A. During the academic year, fees for full-time matriculating URI Students are included in the payment of the semester tuition and fee bill. All other individuals may purchase a Rec Pass Membership or Tootell Aquatic Center (TAC) pass in person at the Rec Service Center.

 

Q. How do I use the facilities?

A. All patrons entering the Mackal-Keaney-Tootell Complex must check-in with the Rec Service Center in order to gain access.

URI Students and Faculty/Staff must present their valid University ID card. All other members must present their membership photo ID (issued at time of purchase) to gain access. Please display your membership receipt to the Rec Service Center Attendant as proof of payment until your ID is produced (3 - 5 business days).

 

Q. Can I bring a friend who doesn't go to URI to the facilities?

Yes, Members may sponsor up to two (2) guests per day. Daily guest passes to utilize all facilities (includes pool) may be purchased at the Rec Service Center. Members must remain with their guests at all times.

Q. I don't use the recreation facilities. Why do I have to pay the fee?

A. By charging every student, we are able to keep the cost low for each and make the recreation facilities available to all. This has the effect of encouraging use by every student, which meets the goals of encouraging healthful activities, student interaction and recreation. Faculty, staff, alumni and their spouses on the other hand, must pay the recreation fee if they wish to use the facilities.

 

Q. Why do I have to pay an extra fee to participate in fitness classes and intramural sports?

In order to keep the mandatory student fee as low as possible the decision was made to make additional program participation and therefore the fees, optional. Program fees cover the operating expenses for the particular program. Every effort is made to keep program fees as low as possible so that all can choose to participate.

 

Q. If I'm a URI Student, how do I go about getting a job with Recreational Services?

A. We have all job applications and job descriptions listed on our web site under Employment or just stop in the Rec Services Main Office to pick up an application.
