Most Intramural Sports activities are $25 to play with an additional $25 forfeit deposit that is refundable as long as the team does not forfeit. Intramural Ice Hockey is $150 to participate. See the Intramural Sports main page for a list of activities offered and associated costs (if any).
Intramural sports are played at a variety of locations, including:
University of Rhode Island Mackal-Keaney-Tootell Complex:
The Intramural Sports office is located in Keaney in the Mackal-Keaney-Tootell Complex. Our office is at the end of the ROTC hallway and next to the Softball offices.
For each major sport you participate in, you may only play on one single-gender (Men’s or Women’s) team and one Co-Rec team.
If you know in advance that your team will not have enough players to compete as scheduled, contact the Intramural Sports office at 401.874.5972 before 3:00 p.m. on the day of the game (or by 12:00 Noon on Friday for any weekend games) to receive a DEFAULT. By calling ahead and defaulting the game, your team will receive a loss and a sportsmanship grade of '3' for that game. If you do not call ahead and simply don't show up, your team will receive a forfeit loss and must pay another $25 deposit. (If no additional forfeits take place, this refund can be returned).
In the event of inclement weather, decisions regarding playing conditions MAY not be made before 12:00 p.m. Team captains will be responsible for contacting the IM Sports Cancelation Hotline at 401.874.5815 to learn the status of the games. The IM Sports office will make every attempt to send a mass email/text via IMLeagues or make phone calls to the team captains (if possible) as soon as the decision to NOT PLAY has been made. There is no guarantee that postponed contests will be rescheduled.
No. Candidates for varsity intercollegiate programs are not eligible for intramural participation in the "related sport" in which they are participating. (This includes all players on the roster and other people who are practicing with the team). To be eligible, participants must have not participated with the University of Rhode Island "related sport" (in either practice or games) within the last 365 days. For non-related sports, there is a limit of 2 University of Rhode Island varsity intercollegiate athletes per team (for example: no more than 2 current varsity track & field athletes may play on the same flag football team). Please contact the Intramural Sports office if you have any questions regarding participant eligibility.
Yes, members of sport club teams are eligible for intramural competition in the sport in which they practice. It should be noted, however, that Intramural Sports teams are limited to 3 club players per roster in all sports. Please contact the Intramural Sports office or the Coordinator of Club Sports if you have any questions regarding participant eligibility.
At URI, we strive to promote a pleasant atmosphere, not only for our students but for our guests as well. This pertains to Intramural Sports as much as any other part of campus. To promote a friendly and safe atmosphere, Intramural Sports implements a sportsman ship rating system that pertains towards players and fans/spectators. The team sports rating system will be instituted to provide additional sportsmanship regulations. Each team will be given a sportsmanship rating for each game by that game’s officials/game manager. The rating will be given on a point scale. Teams may be excluded from the playoffs if they are habitual offenders of the sportsmanship rating system or are determined to be detrimental to the Intramural Sports Program and the other teams in that sport. The sportsmanship rating system is as follows:
Teams which win by a default or forfeit will receive a “4” sportsmanship rating. The maximum sportsmanship rating possible is a “3” for games in which a player is ejected. Teams receiving a “2” or “1” rating during the regular season will receive written notification from the Coordinator of Intramural Sports informing them of their unacceptable behavior and that they are being placed on probation for the remainder of the academic year. This communication will be sent to the team captain. Teams receiving a “2” or “1” rating twice during a single sport season will be ineligible for the playoffs at the end of the season. Teams receiving a “2” or “1” rating during the playoffs will be eliminated from further competition in the playoffs and are subject to further disciplinary action to be determined by the Coordinator of Intramural Sports and the disciplinary action committee.
