Joseph S. Rossi, Ph.D., is the Director of Research at the Cancer Prevention Research Center and Professor in the Department of Psychology. Dr. Rossi received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Rhode Island in 1984. He joined the CPRC in 1983 as a graduate research assistant and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the CPRC in quantitative and health psychology in 1985. Since his appointment to the faculty in 1985, Dr. Rossi has been principal investigator or co-PI on more than 40 research grants for more than $50 million, has published more than 100 papers and chapters, and has presented more than 300 papers at national and international meetings. A recent study conducted by the Institute for Scientific Information and the American Psychological Society listed Dr. Rossi as the 5^th most influential author in psychology. His areas of interest include research methodology and measurement (power analysis, meta-analysis, structural equation modeling), health promotion and disease prevention, and expert system development. Dr. Rossi has been extensively involved in adapting transtheoretical model measures and interventions to a wide range behaviors, including sun exposure, exercise, dietary fat reduction, weight control, diabetes self-management, cocaine use, HIV risk reduction, alcohol use, radon gas exposure, and multiple health risk behavior. Dr. Rossi has been a consultant on health and research methodology to numerous organizations, including the American Academy of Dermatology, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Health Canada, National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, and the USPHS Indian Health Service. Dr. Rossi is a member of the University of Rhode Island Institutional Review Board and a member of the Council for Research. He is also an active member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Psychological Association, American Public Health Association, Eastern Psychological Association, Psychometric Society, Society of Behavioral Medicine, and Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology. In his spare time he enjoys making sushi at home and is an avid amateur astronomer.
