Survey Center: Optical Scanner
The optical scanner reads customized response forms and creates a data field directly, thus avoiding the expensive and tedious hand-keying of data. The subjects themselves record the responses directly on the forms and clerical staff check for errors before entry. Scantools software or our customized software are used to automatically check for inconsistencies, and alert the operator when they occur. Detailed procedures for both computer data cleaning and manual cleaning exist and have been regularly upgraded and refined.
