April 11, 2011: Recorded Apple Pest Message in

Hello Apple Growers,
I found hatched winter moth eggs toay in Warwick, RI in opened red maple
buds. I'd looked several times over the last couple of weeks, but today
was
the
first
I found
hatched eggs. If your orchard is in a known winter moth
infested area, apply an insecticide within the next week. Any insecticide
appears to be quite effective against winter moth, the key is spraying
before many larvae hatch and wriggle their way into buds. Once larvae
are in buds they are protected from insecticides until the buds open.
Once apple, pear and blueberry buds open, damage to the flowers has
already occurred.
