Research Topic Submission
Due: December 12, 2010

Submission Type: Sakai Discussion Board post

When you have a topic idea, go to the Topic Discussions tool in Sakai. Under the category Research Papers, you will see a forum with your name. In your forum, create a new topic with the short title for you topic (e.g., Employment Arbitration or Facebook for Selection).

Write a description of the topic and the issues you would like to investigate. Discuss the resources you have found to date. If you are considering multiple topics, create a separate Discussion topic of each of them. While can post ideas at any point starting now, you are required to post at least one topic by December 12, 2010.

Class members: Go to the forums of other class members and comment on their topics with suggestions and potential research sources.

To earn 5 points for this assignment:

  1. Post topic(s) by December 12th
  2. Demonstrate that you have presented at least one topic that is relevant to the field and there is sufficient resources available on the topic to answer a research question related to that topic.

We will use the class meeting on January 24th and 31st for discussions about your topics. Please be prepared to discussion your topic(s) along with potential research questions on the day to which you have been assigned.

Research Question Submission

This submission will be a draft of the first 2 to 4 pages of your paper. Use the following structure to guide your writing.

Introduction- Discuss your topic in general terms.

  1. What is the general issue(s) you are addressing?
  2. Why is this issue(s) important?
  3. To whom is it important? What stakeholders have an interest in this issue?

Research question- What is your specific research question?

  1. What is your model of your question?
  2. How will you attempt to arrive at an answer to your question that your can "sell" to the reader?
  3. Where will you look for research sources? What bodies of literature have you been, or will you be surveying?
  4. What might the answer to your question look like? I am looking for the form of an answer, not the specific content of the answer.
  5. What type of conclusions/recommendations might come out of your research?

To earn 5 points for this assignment:

  1. Submit the Research Question by February 13th
  2. Question should be framed in a manner that can be answered through literature review
  3. Importance of the question documented
  4. Types of research to be used identified

Methodology Presentation/Discussion
In Class: February 14 or February 28. See Syllabus for your assigned class

Submission Type: Class Discussion

Be prepared to discuss your progress on your research paper including these questions (from your Research Question Submission)

  1. What is your model of your question (see added section in class outline)?
  2. How will you attempt to arrive at an answer to your question that your can "sell" to the reader?
  3. Where will you look for research sources? What bodies of literature have you been, or will you be surveying?
  4. What might the answer to your question look like? I am looking for the form of an answer, not the specific content of the answer.

Research Paper Outline

Here is the format for you outline

Research Question

Restate your research question from your research question submission

General literature and relevant theories

List the literature sources and briefly discuss each theory you will use to generate a set of research hypotheses. Your research hypotheses will be essentially the answers one should expect from application of relevant theories.

If you have developed a model of your research question, include this model in this submission (See "Answering Your Research Question" section of this Course Outline (Previous outline section)

Specific research

Discuss the major research study you intend to site using the following format

Carter and Dean (1983)
Research question- What research question did they attempt to answer?
Methodology used- What methodology did they use to answer their question?
Findings- What were their findings and conclusions

Reference list

A complete bibliography using proper format for each of the references you intend to use (to date)

Outline Format

You must structure your outline submission in the form of first level headings, secondary heading and tertiary heading (like the structure of your paper). In the body of each section put a brief description of what you intend to or have done in this section. As you write you can simply replace this short description with your textual material. To earn 5 points for this assignment:

  1. Submit outline by March 27th
  2. Outline should be in heading structure
  3. The various sections of the paper should be identified and summarized
  4. All All literature used to date should be cited correctly

  2. Draft should be complete with respect to major sections of the paper
