DR. ANNE S. DE GROOT and her team at EpiVax have come up with a novel way to produce a vaccine to combat what she fears may be a serious flu outbreak linked to a new strain of the virus in China.

The lab, run by chemist Jimmie Oxley and supported largely by the Department of Homeland Security, offers the most diverse explosives curriculum in the U.S. And many of the students who study there will advance to jobs on the front lines in the fight against criminals and terrorists.

 

Congressman Langevin Tours URI Biotech Program to Address Knowledge District Needs

Continuing his Rhode Island Skilled Economy (RISE) Tour, Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) visited the Biotechnology Manufacturing Program at the University of Rhode Island's Feinstein Providence Campus where he attended a presentation on the program's role in growing the Knowledge District, a hub for research and economic development in key industries in downtown Providence's old Jewelry District. Isaac Ginis, Professor, Graduate School of Oceanography, discusses URI's hurricane research and how it is used to improve hurricane forecasting by NOAA and the Navy with Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed at a recent NSF event on Capitol Hill hosted by Senators Harry Reid and Bill Nelson. RI Congressman James Langevin was also in attendance.
