Comparative Effectiveness Research funded by ARRA

 

The American Reinvestment & Recovery Act (ARRA) included $1.1 billion for comparative effectiveness research on health care.  The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has begun issuing calls for proposals on this topic. The most recent program announcements are listed below.

Dr. Tamar Lasky, associate professor of Pharmacy Practice, made a presentation Nov. 13 to the university research community about applying for comparative effectiveness research funding. View the slides from her presentation.

Information Technology Professionals in Health Care:  Program of Assistance for University-Based Training

Due Jan. 25. This program supports the development of training courses that a student can complete in a year or less. Awards of $6,500 per trainee are available.

Health Information Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Projects

HHS 2010 ONC-TR-005

Due Jan. 25. Four awards of $15 million each are available. The program supports study of the security of health information technology, development of new architectures for health care applications, secondary use of electronic health records and other topics.

Research On Biosamples From Selected Diabetes Clinical Studies (RC4)

Due March 11. Total $3 million available; 5-10 awards anticipated. The program supports lab tests on non-renewable samples from clinical trials and studies. Studies should examine disease mechanisms, disease pathogenic processes, and biomarkers of disease progression or clinical responses.

Comparative Effectiveness Research on Upper Endoscopy in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Eradication Methods for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Dementia Detection and Management Strategies (RC4)

Due Feb. 26. A total of $15 million will be available, with $5 million going to each of the three focus areas. Within each focus area, the agency expects to make 4-6 awards. This program supports preliminary comparative effectiveness research in high-priority areas that have not yet been studied.

Due Feb. 26. Total $10 million available; 6-7 awards anticipated. This program supports projects to improve the efficiency, validity and credibility of comparative effectiveness research studies.

NIH Director’s Opportunity for Research in Five Thematic Areas (RC4)

Due March 15.  Up to $80 million will be available to support three-year projects with budgets of more than $500,000 per year. The five areas are (1) Applying genomics and other high-throughput technologies; (2) translating basic science discoveries into new and better treatments; (3) using science to enable health care reform; (4) focusing on global health; and (5) reinvigorating the biomedical research community.

Recovery Act Limited Competition: Behavioral Economics for Nudging the Implementation of Comparative Effectiveness Research: Pilot Research (RC4)

Due March 19. Total $5 million available; 4-5 awards anticipated. This program supports research in behavioral economics that explores how health care providers can best be encouraged to use the results of comparative effectiveness research in their practices.
