The American Reinvestment & Recovery Act (ARRA) included $1.1 billion for comparative effectiveness research on health care. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has begun issuing calls for proposals on this topic. The most recent program announcements are listed below.

Due Jan. 25. This program supports the development of training courses that a student can complete in a year or less. Awards of $6,500 per trainee are available.

Due Jan. 25. Four awards of $15 million each are available. The program supports study of the security of health information technology, development of new architectures for health care applications, secondary use of electronic health records and other topics.

Due March 11. Total $3 million available; 5-10 awards anticipated. The program supports lab tests on non-renewable samples from clinical trials and studies. Studies should examine disease mechanisms, disease pathogenic processes, and biomarkers of disease progression or clinical responses.

Due March 15. Up to $80 million will be available to support three-year projects with budgets of more than $500,000 per year. The five areas are (1) Applying genomics and other high-throughput technologies; (2) translating basic science discoveries into new and better treatments; (3) using science to enable health care reform; (4) focusing on global health; and (5) reinvigorating the biomedical research community.
