Undergraduate and Graduate Research Grant Program
2008 Funds Available for Undergraduate and Graduate Research Project
Guidelines for Students || Guidelines for Faculty Sponsors || Forms
The Division of Research and Economic Development, the Honors Program and the Sea Grant Office are providing grant support for undergraduate and graduate research, creative or artistic projects. The program underscores the value we place on providing students with research opportunities. Proposals will be evaluated by the Undergraduate and Graduate Research Grant Committee, which is composed of faculty and students from various disciplines. Each student chosen for support will receive a grant of up to $500 for undergraduates and $800 for graduates to help support his or her project. One of the goals of the committee is to distribute the awards to students with quality projects representing a wide variety of departments within the University.
The program provides funds to undergraduates and graduates to participate in original research, creative or artistic projects in which they have a major responsibility. These projects require supervision by a faculty sponsor.
To apply for a grant, a student (or group of up to three students) must complete a proposal form and submit the proposal along with a letter of support from a faculty sponsor. For any project that requires IRB or IACUC approval, the proposal must state whether or not such approval is integral to the aspect of the project for which funding is sought. In addition, IRB or IACUC approval must be obtained by April 1, 2008 for consideration in this year’s selection process. Any group focused on a single project is eligible for individual project level funding, i.e., $500 for undergraduate projects and $800 for graduate projects. The forms are available online at: http://www.uri.edu/research/tro/ungradprop08.doc
The grants have certain limitations: (1) an individual undergraduate or graduate can receive only one award in an academic year; (2) funds may be used only to support projects which include original student research, creative or artistic endeavors; (3) IRB or IACUC approval must be obtained by April 1, 2008; and (4) upon completion of the project the student must submit a final report to the faculty sponsor and the Division of Research and Economic Development.
Proposals must be submitted to the Division of Research and Economic Development at 70 Lower College Road (first floor), no later than 4 p.m. December 10, 2007 to be considered for an award. Questions about this program should be directed to Karen Markin, Director of Research Development, at ext. 2223, or Richard McIntyre, Director of the Honors Program, at ext. 2303.
Applicants will be notified in early January on the status of their applications.
