What kind of research opportunities are there?

Universities, biotechnolgy corpoations, and the federal government all host research opportunities for students. These provide superior exposure to the field of biotechnology: you will use all of your skills and knowledge to pursue new knowledge in any of the diverse fields of biology. There are a limited number of research positions available and most are awarded based on academic standing, class performance, and professor recommendations. So if this interests you, let your professors know now so they can help you prepare.

Research positions for students are not particularly well paid, but often include a stipend for food, housing, and transportation and are an excellent way to practice and apply your newly-learned skills. The knowledge gained and contacts made are the real rewards of a research opportunity.
