Catalog Description: Laboratory and demonstrations of principles of the animal industries.

Fred Launer is a new addition to the Animal Science department. Fred specializes in the area of animal management, handling and disease. He came to the University of Rhode Island after extensive experience as an Animal Health Technician with the USDA and a Veterinary Paramedic with the State of Rhode Island DEM, Division of Agriculture. Fred comes to us with a wealth of knowledge regarding disease prevention, testing and education. Before taking the lecturer position at the University of Rhode Island, Fred has acted as an adjunct and guest lecturer at Tufts Veterinary School and the University of Connecticut, respectively. Students enjoy Fred's interactive style of teaching, his depth of knowledge and his dedication to his students and classes.

Reasons To Take This Course

"One of the first classes taken by beginning animal science students is AVS 102, the introductory animal science lab. It is usually taken concurrently with AVS 101, the introductory animal science lecture. AVS 102 offers individuals the beginning of understanding and comprehending basic knowledge and handling mechanics for livestock and companion animals. It is a very informative course, especially for students who have never had any prior large animal experience. The animals discussed throughout the semester are Dairy and Beef Cattle, Swine, Sheep, Goats, Poultry, Horses, some Exotics, Dogs, and Cats. Since all of the classes are at Peckham Farm, it is composed mainly of hands-on activities, ranging from milking cows to crutching and nail-clipping sheep. The active participation allows for a fun way in which students can fully immerse themselves in the world animal science. Professor Launer eagerly shares his knowledge from past experiences, showing students how the learned information can be applied to everyday life. It prepares animal science students for future Animal and Veterinary Science courses." - Jennifer

"This lab section of AVS 101 was a great component. As an introductory course, it helped solidify the basic knowledge we learned in 101 with the use of dissections and live animals. The dissections were very basic, but helped prepare me for the classes I am taking now that involve more intricate dissections. "The lab for Introduction to Animal Science was a fun and enlightening class. We visited a few types of animal operations including a horse farm, a poultry farm, a dairy farm as well as others. We also performed necropsies and learned the basics of livestock husbandry and care. It certainly opened my eyes to the broad field of Animal Science.
