What is an Extension Agent?

Extension agents are employed by the Cooperative Extension Service located at state land-grant colleges and universities and/or the local government to deliver educational and technical outreach programs that address local issues in collaboration with:

  • county officials
  • youth group coordinators
  • local production facilities
  • faculty members

Extension agents disseminate knowledge and technical expertise, gained through research conducted at USDA and land-grant colleges and universities, to local producers. They may also obtain extramural funding for outreach efforts and work with the local media to promote and educate the community about current outreach projects.

Producers will often seek the advice of an extension agent regarding various management or production problems. The extension agent consults faculty at the university that have expertise in the issue and together they work to help the producer.
