Description
Description of the Major

The Medical Physics program at URI is unique because it prepares students for a career in medical physics in only five years. Rhode Island Hospital provides a residency program on a competitive basis for students upon graduation. This is a great opportunity for students because very few accredited medical physics programs have residency programs in close proximity to their campuses.

The Medical Physics program at URI is unique because it prepares students for a career in medical physics in only five years. Rhode Island Hospital plays a vital role in the program. Many of the graduate courses in medical physics are taught at the hospital by practicing Medical Physicists. The facilities at the hospital will also be made available for students to use as teaching aids and research tools. In addition, Rhode Island Hospital provides a residency program on a competitive basis for students upon graduation. This is a great opportunity for students because very few accredited medical physics programs have residency programs in close proximity to their campuses.

Careful consideration has been put into the creation of this program to provide students with the education they will need to become accredited. Students will obtain a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Master’s of Medical Physics. The first few years of study are similar to those of strictly physics majors. In the fourth and fifth years, students begin to focus on medical and biological physics courses that include lectures and demonstrations at Rhode Island Hospital. To become certified, students will then need to apply to an accredited hospital program, like the one offered by Rhode Island Hospital. Descriptions of the program schedule and course information can be found in the Semester Map and Course Page.
