Psi Chi: The National Honor Society in Psychology & the Psychology Club

The URI chapter of Psi Chi has been active for more than 20 years... And our membership is increasing. This year, we want to induct you! Some of the benefits associated with Psi Chi membership are described below.

To receive information about our meetings, as well as information about psychology internships and research opportunities, you can subscribe to the Psi Chi/Psychology Club Listserv. Just send an email in the following format to listserv@pete.uri.edu: Subscribe Psi-Chi@pete.uri.edu "your full name"

This listserv is open to anyone using a URI email account; if you wish to subscribe to the listserver using an different type of account, contact Dr. Su L. Boatright-Horowitz by email: ugpsych@aol.com

Activities
Psi Chi and the Psychology Club sponsor several events and activities throughout the year, including weekly meetings, graduate school preparation and career workshops, and community service.

Faculty Coffee Hours
At least once each semester, the Psi Chi students organize a faculty coffee hour, inviting their favorite faculty member to enjoy conversation and refreshments. All U.R.I. students are welcome to participate in these events.

Graduate School Preparation
Participation in the URI chapter of Psi Chi can help undergraduate students prepare for graduate school in several ways. You will interact regularly with upper level students and learn about their experiences with the Graduate Record Exam and their applications to graduate schools. In addition, during the fall semester, an Associate Dean from URI Graduate School attends one of our meetings to discuss the graduate school application process. At this meeting, the focus is on filling out graduate school applications and writing personal statements.

Career Workshops
We often organize additional events that help students make career decisions. Career workshops are scheduled on a weekly basis. Some recent discussion topics include:

  • School Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology and Counseling
  • Forensic Psychology
  • Allications for Graduate School
  • What is it Like to be a Graduate Student?
  • Pediatric Psychology
  • How to Take the GREs
  • Entry-level Jobs in Psychology

All of these graduate school preparation events are open to interested undergraduate students. Attend our meetings and subscribe to our listserv so that you can participate in these events!

Philanthropic Events
U.R.I. Psi Chi and Psychology Club students often organize philanthropic events to benefit charitable organizations. Every December, they make Christmas ornaments for the Hasbro Toy Company. For each toy donated to Hasbro, a needy child receives a toy for the holidays. The Psi Chi and Psychology Club students enjoy making the holiday season more enjoyable for many young children.
Our students also enjoy visiting local nursing homes to visit with the residents. At Halloween, pumpkin painting is a fun activity for our students to share with others.

Teleconferencing
Psi Chi and The Psychology Club at URI meet with interested CCE students via satellite. Students from both campuses are able to talk to graduate students about "What it is like to be a graduate student" and about "How to apply to graduate programs," while learning more about teleconferencing. Call Su L. Boatright-Horowitz, (401) 874-4231 for details.
