The University Alarm Systems(Fire and Burglar) are under the management of the Superintendent of Alarms. The staff consists of four technicians. Three work the day shift and one works 7pm to 3:30 am. This staff maintains all systems and does the required Fire Code drill. All systems are maintained in operating condition twenty-four hours per day. One technician is on call at all times. |
Most University buildings are now protected by an approved Fire Alarm System, which is tied directly to the local Fire Department and/or the Campus Security as follows: |
| |
| Main Campus - tied into the Kingston Fire Department, South Kingston Police and the Campus Police & Security. |
| Narragansett Bay Campus - tied into the Narragansett Fire Department |
| W. Alton Jones Campus - tied by telephone line to the main Campus Police & Security Department |
| Providence Campus - tied into the Providence Fire Department |
A number of buildings and specific departments within buildings on the main campus have a Burglar Alarm System, which are tied into the Campus Police & Security. |
Systems are installed on a request basis and all components are paid out of the requesting department funds. Labor is supplied by Safety and Risk Management. Upkeep of system is funded by the Department of Safety and Risk Management. |
At the present time there are 100 individual systems in service. |
The present alarm system was installed in 1998/1999, is up to date, and is radio controlled so we do not rely on any other communications system (such as telephone) to transmit our signal to the Police Station. |
The Superintendent of Alarms, whom acts as approval authority for the State Fire Marshal on alarm systems, approves all Fire Alarm System design and upgrading. |
All Burlar Alarm Systems are designed and material lists prepared within the Department of Safety and Risk Management. The individual departments prepare the requisition to purchase the parts and materials, they are shipped to Safety and Risk Management and we install at no cost to the department. |
