All hazardous waste matters are handled within the Department by the Coordinator of Hazardous Materials and Chemical Waste.  The University maintains a chemical and hazardous waste storage facility.  This facility has been approved by DEM.

The Department personnel (Director, Coordinator of Hazardous Materials and Chemical Waste and Chemical Hygienists) pick up chemicals and waste as requested by the various users and transport it  to the storage facility.  A  contract or under  a  blanket  order  repackages the material into lab packs and transports the waste off campus.  This  shipping  process  meets  EPA  requirements  and is monitored  by the staff through the Manifest System.

Now  included  under hazardous  waste is all biomedical waste and pathological waste that is picked up and packaged by Department personnel.  This waste is shipped on a bi-weekly basis to an approved facility.  All material is manifested in accordance with the applicable code/regulation.

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

The MSDS for each chemical on the campuses is on file in the Department.  The books are maintained within the office.  Copies of all manifests are kept within the departmental records.  They are also available in the chemical inventory system.  The MSDS can be brought up on the screen and printed as needed.
