Here at the URI Safety and Risk Management Department, we offer various seminars and training classes to educate people about waste management, fire safety, hazard communications, and more. The following are the classes that will be offered this semester, with a short description of each.

HAZARD COMMUNICATIONS: YOUR RIGHT TO KNOW.

You have a Right to Know all the information about the hazardous substances you use or come in contact with at work. Understand the potential hazards of the chemicals around you and learn how to reduce the risks involved in working with hazardous materials. All employees who work near, around or with chemicals, and the supervisors who oversee them, MUST be trained annually. OSHA/RIDOL requires annual training.

Target Audience: Required for all who work or come into contact with ANY chemicals outside of a laboratory setting or in the course of their job. Namely, all personnel in Facilities Services and support departments, Dining Services, HRL, and Printing Services and their supervisors.

INITIAL: ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT.

This hazardous waste course is INTRODUCTORY for new employees and students who work in a laboratory and use chemicals. It presents a overview of chemical and biological waste management, with a focus on protecting individuals and the environment from exposure to hazards. A comprehensive section on managing chemical risk in the lab is included.This course is EPA required.

Target Audience: New employees and students who work in a laboratory and use chemicals.

REFRESHER: PRUDENT PRACTICES AND LABORATORY WASTE MANAGEMENT.

This course provides the REQUIRED ANNUAL REFRESHER training, presents prudent practices of good laboratory management, and reviews the principles of correct hazardous waste management. New information and procedures can be added or changed each academic year, thus the need for a REFRESHER. This is an annual EPA requirement.

Target Audience: Required for all employees and students who work in a laboratory setting using chemical and have already taken the INITIAL class.
