As part of a USEPA Supplemental Environmental Project, Pfizer, Inc. has supported URI in creating documents to further its campus-wide Laboratory Waste Management Programs. The documents provided on this Web page have been made generic and are available for downloading to any college or university for customization for its own program needs. |
The documents, and their purposes, are:

A comprehensive Laboratory Waste Management Plan that includes campus-wide roles and responsibilities for individuals with direct and indirect responsibility for laboratory waste management; regulatory summaries and reference materials; and examples of pollution prevention plans, laboratory waste management Standard Operating Procedures, a training matrix, and a waste tracking spreadsheet. This is designed for personnel involved in the day-to-day management of laboratory waste and associated programs.
A Laboratory Waste Guidebook (PDF, 860k), (Software requirement for customizing Guidebook is Adobe Acrobat), a laboratory guidance reference manual that summarizes the highlights of the Laboratory Waste Management Plan and provides relevant contact information for on-campus resources. This is designed as an easy-to-use guide for faculty, laboratory staff, graduate students and interns working in research laboratories, faculty and laboratory managers who provide student laboratory classes, and students taking laboratory classes. This presentation is designed for faculty and staff who provide laboratory waste management training to faculty, staff and students.
A Pollution Prevention Guideline (Microsoft Powerpoint 97, 421k) for Academic Laboratories. This presentation is a summary of Chapter 8 of the Laboratory Waste Management Plan. It sets forth the six-step Pollution Prevention methodology utilized by the University of Rhode Island to develop alternative teaching laboratory experiments for first-year chemistry students.
