SMILE functions as a "pipeline" from 4th to 12th grade and ultimately into post-secondary education

Weekly Club Meetings

The basic units of the program are weekly after school clubs that provide fun, integrated math and science activities in a relaxed atmosphere. In each school, the SMILE club has a year round schedule of hand-on math and science experiences, mentoring, college, and career awareness. The SMILE clubs are led by two school teachers, and each club meets for 2 hours weekly in each school. The program function as a pipeline where students can join as early as in the fourth grade and continue through the twelfth grade, finally going on to college.

Science and Career Oriented Fieldtrips

There are  field trips to nearby sites of scientific interest and the students also participate in community projects. The SMILE clubs build a cohort of interested and motivated students.
