Common Ground and Greek Life
Dr. Mark Woods remarks at Greek Reception
Common Ground is pleased to be able to sponsor today’s event and very pleased about our continued collaboration with the URI Greek community.
I’ll be brief because I know you’ve got lots to do (and food to eat).
First, thank you for your continued support of Rhode Map to Safety. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to responsible alcohol use policies. And thank you your renewed focus on Greek traditions of scholarship, philanthropy, and leadership.

The fact that your Greek Week pairings are taking place here rather than in a bar is a clear demonstration of this focus. So are the substantial decreases in alcohol policy violations that have occurred during the past two Greek weeks. I’ve greatly enjoyed being a judge for the past three years and am looking forward to it for this year.
A few highlights from Common Ground and RMS for this semester:
As you’ll be seeing and hearing, RMS media efforts this semester will focus on the Greek Community’s support for responsible alcohol policies and on providing positive publicity for your philanthropy, scholarship and leadership initiatives. The signs and flyers that you see around the room are examples of the messages RMS will be bringing to the URI campus.
We’ll be conducting the second Greek survey to identify ways in which Common Ground can help the URI Greek community grow and prosper. Survey completion by your membership is critically important and, like last year, will increase the odds of your chapter receiving a fabulous participation prize (projector TV).
Finally, as part of RMS, our own Curious Joe (Andy Brown) will be circulating here to get your responses to some interesting questions and take photos. This is your chance to let other URI students hear directly from you about the positive contributions your chapters are making.
Thanks again, keep up the good work, and Go Rhody!
