Sigma Kappa was founded in 1874 at Colby College in Maine. The
five founders of Sigma Kappa were the first women admitted into
the college: Mary Low Carver, Louise Helen Coburn, Frances Mann
Hall, Ida Fuller Pierce and Elizabeth Gorham Hoag were the first
women to pursue higher education at this historically male college.
These five strong women established the basis for a national sorority
which still thrives today after over 120 years. They were also
pioneers in the fields of education, business, public service
and philanthropy. They were women with high personal and professional
goals. They continue to influence the women today who are attracted
to Sigma Kappa
