Scholarship at Phi Chapter:
Academics are highly stressed at Phi chapter of Sigma
Kappa. Vice President of Scholarship utilizes several means of
positive reinforcement for motivating sisters to excel in school
work. First, there is an "A" board where sisters who
receive A's on tests, quizzes, or papers have their names displayed.
If a sister receives more than five A's in one semester, she is
rewarded with a certificate of achievement and a small prize (such
as a small bag of candy or key chain). The sister with the most
A's receives a fifteen dollar certificate.
There are also Sigma paddles given for specific achievements.
There is a Sigma Studier paddle given for one sister who studies
continuously (although this sister may not necessarily have a
very high GPA). There is a Sigma Pledge paddle for the pledge
who is voted by her pledge sisters as a model pledge. Finally,
there is a Sigma Scholar paddle awarded at the end of each year
for a non-senior sister with the highest cumulative GPA. This
sister receives free dues for one year.
There are various programs held at Sigma Kappa. There are workshops
held to help sisters improve time management and study skills.
There is a buddy system set up between pledges and sisters who
share an interest in the same major. This gives pledges the opportunity
to discover what interested majors would entail as well as help
pledges who have difficulties in a particular major.
As of this point planning is underway for holding a Scholarship
Banquet next fall during parents weekend. This banquet will be
held in Sigma Kappa to recognize sister's hard work and dedication
to academics. There will also be a new competition to motivate
sisters to do their best. This will be a mother-daughter competition
to honor the mother and daughter combo with the highest GPA per
semester. There may also be another contest similar to the mother-daughter
competition with roommate GPA's.
School work is considered a top priority at Sigma Kappa. Phi Chapter
is continuously improving the position of Scholarship to provide
sisters with as many opportunities to excel as possible. Scholarship
is always open to any new ideas that may better assist Sigma kappa
to maintain her high ideals and standards.
