    Scholarship Information

    The Alpha Sigma Lambda Adult Education Foundation, a philanthropic companion organization to the continuing education honor society which has its Epsilon Rho Chapter at the URI Feinstein College of Continuing Education (URI FCCE), is offering two scholarships in the amount of $1500, and four additional scholarships in the amount of $1200, to students at an institution that has an Alpha Sigma Lambda (ASL) Chapter. Each college with an ASL chapter may submit two applications. There are currently over 300 chapters in the U.S. but less than half of them submit applications.

    Who may apply?
    Any student at URI FCCE who has achieved the following criteria:
    • Completed at least 30 semester hours of graded coursework at this institution.(Do not include transfer credits.);
    • Achieved a grade point average 3.2 on a 4.0 scale on all work taken at this institution;
    • Is 24 years of age or older;
    • Is enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program at this institution;
    • Has a financial need for assistance to complete the degree;
    • Student does not have to be a member of the local Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter to apply.
    All awards granted for the 2009-10 academic year are to assist with undergraduate expenses for students enrolled during that time period. The scholarships are available only for students with at least a full calendar year of work needed to complete their undergraduate degree. This may include taking classes on a part-time basis.

    If you meet the minimum requirements to apply and wish to submit an application, please come to the URI FCCE office of Admissions and Advising, room 245, or contact Cessie Hernandez at (401) 277-5163, right away for the necessary forms. All parts of the application must be handed in together to this office no later than April 17, 2009. A local decision will be made if there are more than two requests.

    In addition to the criteria mentioned above, a statement of leadership experiences by the student and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member are needed and will be evaluated on a comparison basis. Financial needs will be considered but will not be a primary factor since the basis of this scholarship is for recognition of outstanding adult learners.

    This is an opportunity which could be beneficial to you, and we encourage you to examine the application procedures to determine if it is appropriate for you.
