| 9/24/03 Hey guys, The whale watch is this Sunday. We will be meeting at 9:45 in the traffic circle outside of the union. If you live on campus and need a ride, be there! We will have directions available to the drivers at that time. Info about events already gone by: Everyone who went on the Bert trip last sunday had a great time. They caught a lot of fish, and, after figuring out how to filet them without making "fish nuggets", managed to cook and eat a few of them. Kevin went to the open house at Roger Williams last Saturday, and has reported that if you didnt go, you didn't miss much. He said that their aquaculture facilities were gorgeous, but they weren't really using them for anything. Other reminders and ideas: We will be going to the North Attleboro Salmon Hatchery sometime the first week of November. It will be on a week day, but it is a free trip. It should be a good time- we will get a tour of the facilities and help to strip the fish for breeding purposes. More details will be sent out as plans come together. It was suggested that we might want to look into inviting speaker David Crowley to give a presentation on Pharmaceutacals from the sea. From what I understand, he was a speaker during Coast Week, and everyone who saw his presentation thought it was extrememly interesting and well done. We will be discussing this at upcoming meetings. The aquaculture/fisheries program has plans in the works to build a new pond over at East Farm. They may need help with the building of it. We dont have many details yet, but we may set up some times to go help out. I'll definately keep everyone up to date as far as this goes. Dr. Cobb is still looking for help over at the Bay Campus. If you are interested, bring a resume and an unofficial transcript to his office over in Bisc. Ok, thats about it for this week. For those of you going on the whale watch (and you know who you are) I'll see you on sunday! For those of you who couldnt make it, I'll see you next wednesday- 6:30 in Woodward Student Lounge. Have a great week. Shannon |
| 9/17/03 Hi Everyone! Our second meeting of the year went great. I want to send out a warm welcome to all of the new members for whom this was their first meeting, and I was glad to see how many of the new members from the first meeting returned. And of course... we are always greatful when the "senior" members keep coming back. And then there's Matt... but we wont go there... First off, I was asked to give everyone an urgent message: Save The Bay needs help this Saturday! They are having an eel grass transplant, and they need bodies. If you are interested in helping, you can contact Ralph @ boon49@msn.com. You will be in the water, so dress appropriately. If you want to help, but are unable to get ahold of Ralph, if you show up at the Wickford Dock at 9am, they will find something for you to do. Next, the Cap'n Bert trawl is this Sunday. The boat leaves Wickford Harbor at 8:30, so be there earlier than that! Be sure to dress appropriately- remember its generally colder out on the water, be prepared for anything, and no open toed shoes! There will be a fish fry at Kevins house after so that we can cook what we catch. There will be other food just in case you dont like fish. Directions to the dock can be found here: http://www.uri.edu/student_organizations/mss/directions.html This is the same place that Save The Bay will be at on Saturday. The Whale Watch is coming up! Everyone is very excited about this. It is scheduled for Sunday 9/28. We will meet on campus and head out around 10-ish. We want to take the fewest cars possible, so if you can drive, please let us know. I would drive, but the extra seating in my truck is litterally non-existant. We know we have 2 vehicles right now... if we can get 2 more (that can hold at least 3 people plus the driver) that should just about do it. We need the money for this trip ASAP!!! We really want it by the Bert trip, but if you cant make it to that, we need $6 by next weeks meeting AT THE LATEST!!! I can not stress this enough! If you are unable to make the trip or the meeting, contact me, we'll figure out a time when you can meet up with one of the officers to get us the money. Dont wait to the last second on this- or you wont be going! In other news: ~Fri 9/26- Dr. Cheryl Wilga will be giving a lecture about sharks at the Crossmills Public Library in Charleston at 7:30. Kevin and Amber are definately going- they would be glad to give a few people a ride if they need it. If you have your own car but need directions, let me know, and I'll get them for you. ~Coast Week is coming up- Roger Williams University will be having an open house on Sept. 20 from 9-12. Kevin is planning to go, if you want to go, I'll put you in touch with him. ~Also that weekend is the beach clean up. We arent doing anything as a group, but if you want to help out you can contact the Audoban Society @ (401)949-5454. They will tell you where they need help. ~ We are still planning a trip to the North Attleboro Salmon Hatchery for October. This free trip will include a tour of the facility, and a chance to help strip the fish of eggs, etc for use in breeding. It should be interesting to say the least. ~Dr Cobb still has some jobs available over at the Bay Campus. If you are interested, you should bring a resume and unofficial transcript to his office (the one w/barbie in the fishtank) in BISC. Thats about it for now. If you are going on the Bert trip, have a great time (and dont forget your whale watch money!). I hope everyone has a great week- I'll see you all wednesday. Shannon |

Hi, it’s Shannon, Secretary of the MSS. I hope all of you had a great time this summer, but now that we’re back to school, its also back to business-as-usual. We had our first meeting of the year Wednesday night, and it went very well, although there were a lot less returning members than we would have liked. But that’s a different topic altogether. First I want to take a minute to give a warm welcome to all of our new members who were at the meeting. We look forward to seeing you again. Here’s a rundown of the rest of the meeting: Plans: - First off, the Cap’n Bert is booked for a trawl on Sunday, Sept 21, with Laura Strobe onboard to tell us about the stuff that we catch. The boat leaves at 8:30am, so be there or you’re staying behind. Everyone's invited over to Kevins after to cook some of the stuff we catch. Should be fun! - Whale Watch- we want to do it the weekend of Sept. 28- I need to know from you guys who is interested in going and whether Saturday or Sunday is better, and I need to know that as soon as possible. We can get a discounted rate if we can get 15 people to go, but just in case we don’t get that many people, anyone interested in going needs to pay $7 by the Bert trip at the latest!!! We would really prefer it by the meeting on the 17th. - There will be a Student Organization Fair on Sept 16 on the quad from 10-2. We will have a table set up, trying to recruit some new members. We REALLY need people to help out at the table, so any members who are free during this time AT ALL we would really appreciate it if you came out, even for just a little while. - We are planning to go to the North Attleboro Salmon Hatchery some time in October. We will get to go on a tour of the facility, and help to strip the fish of eggs, etc to be used for breeding purposes. It will be a free trip. We will decide on a date sometime this month. - There will be the first ever Fisheries/AVS cookout on Sept 18. It starts at 5pm and goes till whenever. If you want to go, sign up outside of room 20B Woodward Hall by this Friday. There will be free food, drinks, and games. It should be a good time. - Coast Week is coming up as well. Roger Williams University will be having an open house on Sept 20 from 9-12. Kevin is planning on going, if you would like to go, send me an email and I will put you in touch with him. - Another Coast Week event is the annual Beach Clean-Up. We are not planning on doing anything as a group this time, but we plan to try to do a clean up later in the year. If you would like to participate in this upcoming clean up, you can contact the Audoban Society at (401) 949-5454. - Fri Sept 21- Icthiologist Dr. Wilga will be giving a lecture on sharks at the Crossmills Public Library in Charleston. Anyone interested in going is welcome, but we are going to try to have her come to speak directly to our group. - We are also going to try to have Dave Beutel come to speak to us about the “Bizarre Fish of Rhode Island”. - We plan on sending a few people to the Maine Fisherman’s Forum again this year. The people who went last year had a great time, and I for one, am looking forward to the trip. Of course, this wont be until sometime in the late winter/early spring, so its not really something we need to worry about right now, but its just something to keep in mind. - The RI Shellfish/Aquaculture Convention is coming up. You will have to pay to get into this one unless you volunteer to help out for a little while. If you are interested, let us know, and we’ll see what we can do about getting you in. We should have more details about this soon. - One of our new members, Jeff, has a boat that he goes out in every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to go fishing or clamming. He mentioned that he would be willing to bring a few people out at a time on any of the days that he is going out. He usually leaves around 7:00am. If you are interested in going out, let me know, and I will put you in touch with him. - And last but not least: Dr. Cobb has asked us to let everyone know that there are ecology related paying jobs available over at the bay campus. Anyone interested should see Dr. Cobb in his office in BISC. (It’s the one with the Barbie in the fish tank in the window). You should probably bring a resume of some sort with you.
Ok, that’s about it for now. We are looking forward to a great year. Remember, we are always looking for new members, and its never too late to join, so if you know anyone who is interested, bring them along to the next meeting. We did decide to keep the meeting at 6:30 on Wednesdays in Woodward Student Lounge. If you can’t make the meetings, just let us know that you still want to be included in group activities, and we’ll make sure that you get the minutes, and you can always talk to any of the officers during the week for more details. Another minor detail that I would like to remind you of is the website. Learn to love it. It usually contains the most recent minutes, a calendar of upcoming events, links to marine related web-sites, a list of members, and pictures of past events. I do want to apologize, due to lack of decent internet service over the summer (and right now, in fact) I have not been able to update the site since last spring. As soon as our internet here is up and running, it will be done. In the meantime, please bookmark this site: http://www.uri.edu/student_organizations/mss . I also would like to ask that all existing members make sure that the email address that I have is the correct one. I know that the University has been asking people to switch over to the new system, and I don’t want anyone to be left behind, so please, send me your new email addresses! And check with your friends, make sure they’ve been getting the emails- if not, maybe I don’t have the correct address for them. Now I think that’s really it… sorry this email was so long, I’ll try to keep the rest shorter, but I’ve got to get all of this beginning of the year stuff over with. Good luck to everyone in your classes, and I’ll see you all next week. Thanks Shannon |
