3. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
Committee Report:
Chairman Whitsitt-Lynch said that Senator Borst went through the URI 101 surveys and the committees feeling was that the survey was skewed to promote the enjoyment of the course.
Senator Lynch tracked down important documents (student records from the bursars office) which were floating around the campus last week. (The documents were put into a dumpster on a very windy day and flew around the campus; they should have been shredded.) Chairman Whitsitt-Lynch said they are working to ensure that this does not happen again.
4. EXTERNAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
Committee Report:
No report. Chairperson Whitsitt-Lynch told senators that they have a list of scientific projects going on at URI right now.
5. CULTURAL AFFAIRS COMMITTTEE
Committee Report:
Senator Mean thanked senators who attended the Gilary lecture. She said the committee needs more members and she said she has forms for organizations for the Black History Quiz Bowl. Vice President Lopes said winners will get co-sponsorship money and if not Senate-recognized, they get to pick which organization gets the money.
6. CAMPUS AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
Committee Report:
Chairperson Unger said that there is a parking meeting tomorrow from 11-12 in Carlotti. She said that the parking booth didnt happen today and will be rescheduled. Senator Logue said they are working to get 500-800 bed apartment-style housing near Heathman. Senator Logue questioned Chip Yensan about parking problems which could increase with the building of this apartment/housing complex and he was told that next year there will be a technology fee of $600. Senator Logue is working against this increase in housing expenses. He said about the percentage of freshmen in Freshman Village appears to be 80% freshmen and 20% upperclassmen. He said there will not be a lottery and there will be no triples in the Ro Jo complex next year. He said they will not shut down Heathman second semester of next year. Vice President Lopes congratulated Senator Logue on his informative report.
7. RULES & ETHICS COMMITTEE
Committee Report:
No report.
Chairman Whitsitt-Lynch noted that the Senate voted down the technology fee last year. Director Bush also noted that 300 additional freshman will be accepted into the incoming Freshman Class next fall. Senator Venet said it would cost about $980 per year for high-speed internet, cable and phone for students who had singles. If one had roommates, it would cost about $400. He said the almost $600 difference does not make sense.
8. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Committee Report:
Vice President Lopes spoke about mandatory committee meetings and attendance. He also handed out coupons for bowling next Thursday at 7 p.m. in Johnston. President Murgo said that on Monday, March 3 a bus will leave URI to take students to visit the Governor. President Carothers will address the Senate on March 5th.
President Murgo said he would schedule an Exec Meeting this week. Secretary/Treasurer Hayes spoke about the Skating events to be held at the Boss Arena on Friday the 21st and Friday the 28th from 10 pm midnight. The student discount rate is $2.
