Here We Go Again! Welcome back to Kingston for another year at URI. There is always a special feeling associated with starting a new semester. We are each provided with a clean slate to begin a new year. The fall 2009 semester has already gotten off to a great start. More student organizations helped welcome roughly 3,100 freshmen students to campus during First Night than ever before. The Cigar is back in circulation, SEC is about to host their first major concert, and many of our other organizations have already packed the schedule with great events. It is great to get back in the swing of things again.

Over the course of the year, I will be using this blog to keep you updated on what is happening in the Student Senate. Senate exists to represent the students, because of this, it is important for us to hear what you have to say. On the Web site we have provided a link to our Survey Monkey account where we will be posting informal surveys throughout the year as a way to measure the pulse of the student body and where you stand on particular issues.
The Student Senate already has a full agenda of projects. At our last meeting, we passed a bylaws change that revamped our entire recognition policy. Levels I, II, III, & IV are a thing of the past. Student groups now get recognize under one of four categories: R, A, M, or S, or simply RAMS. “R” stands for recreation and common interest groups, “A” for academic and philanthropic groups, “M” for mass media and government groups, and “S” for skill development groups. We understand that this new system will require some getting used to, but we are confident it will provide much less confusion than Levels I, II, III, and IV did.
We are looking forward to another outstanding year here at URI. If Student Senate is something that interests you, I urge you to sign up to run in our annual fall election. The deadline to sign up is Friday, September 25. There are 15 open seats; this includes 5 reserved specifically for freshmen. Even if you are not running, I ask that every student stops by the Memorial Union on either Wednesday, September 30 or Thursday, October 1 between 9am and 5pm to cast their vote for the newest members of the Student Senate. I wish each of you the best of luck this semester. Go Rhody!
