Examples of Sustainable Practices & Programs at URI:

  • Master Plan for a Sustainable Neighborhood: McDonough+Partners have developed plans to turn the north district into a demonstration of sustainable development and environmental design. The University developed an RFQ and engaged McDonough+Partners during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 school years.
  • Green Purchasing: Members of the campus community are educating themselves and others in eco-friendly products in order to encourage more green purchases.
  • Low Energy Lighting: Director of Facilities Jerry Sidio has supported installation of energy efficient exit lights, saving the University thousands of dollars. Energy faculty and graduate students have done energy audits on some buildings and are investigating energy-saving possibilities.
  • Solar Shingles: Plans are being made to install solar shingles on the Continuing Education Center on campus. The roof will be a demonstration project, educating visitors and students alike.
  • Campus Transportation: Shuttle service now offers students easy access to the center of campus and transportation to most classes. Students are initiating a community bike program and encouraging more eco-friendly parking and transportation solutions.
  • Campus Parking Lot: The Office of Strategic Planning and Institutional Research received funding to install a parking lot that will help filter pollutants before they enter the ground water.
  • Campus Student Organizations: Two student groups, Down to Earth, Up to Us, and Students for a Sustainable Peace undertake teach-ins and sustainable projects on and off campus.
  • Campus Sustainability Learning Circles: Students, faculty, and staff are coming together over lunch to talk about how we each make personal decisions. Decisions about what coffee to drink, food to eat, clothing to wear, cleaning products to use, paper to purchase, and transportation to ride are discussed. Faculty from philosophy, communications, community planning, and writing are helping to provide a framework for discussion. Funding from the Campus Compact supports a library on sustainable living.
