Who can apply to Talent Development?

Technically, any Rhode Island resident who meets core university requirements can apply. Specifically, Talent Development looks for students of color and/or disadvantaged students who, without Talent Development and its support services, could not expect to be admitted to URI.

How can I find out more about Talent Development?

Ask your guidance counselor or call the Talent Development office directly at 874-2901. Staff will be happy to answer your questions.

Where do I get an application?

Applications to TD are ONLINE only and can be filed from 10/1/08 until 2/1/09. The application fee is waived for TD. Additional information is available on this is website on the Apply page. If you have further questions, call us at (401) 874-2901

Do I have to take the SATs?

Yes, and have the results sent directly from the College Board to URI. Test information and applications are available from your guidance office. ACT scores may be subsituted

I finished high school a while ago. Can I apply through Talent Development?

Yes. Follow all regular applications procedures.

I have my G.E.D. Can I apply?

Yes, but you will still be required to meet core admissions requirements. Specific questions about your eligibility should be directed to the Talent Development office at 874-2901.

Can I major in whatever I want at URI?

Yes, you choose your courses of study like every other URI student.

How is being in Talent Development different from being an independent student at URI?

You are first a student at URI. In addition, you will be a member of the Talent Development Program. This means you will go through an academic summer preparatory program, have special academic advisement and a strong support community. It means you have more services available to you.

Do I have to fill out a Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA)?

Yes. If you want to be considered for any financial aid you must file a FAFSA. This information determines eligibility for aid. Aid is awarded based on need. You should fill out the FAFSA in January.

Do I have to go to school full-time if I am in Talent Development?

Yes. All Talent Development students are full-time students (12 or more credits per semester) and must live in University housing during freshman and sophomore years. This policy is subject to certain exceptions upon appeal.
