Academic Tutor Positions for Summer 2009

Talent Development is currently seeking qualified applicants for Summer 2009 Tutors for academic courses.

Tutor Positions

Tutors are needed for the following academic courses:

  • Communications: Introduction to Communications - COM 100 (6 positions)
  • English: Introduction to Literature - ENG 110 (1 position)
  • History: History of the United States Since 1877 - HIS 142 (1 position)
  • History: Introduction to Latin-American Civilization - HIS 180 (1 position)
  • Library: Introduction to Information Literacy - LIB 120 (1-2 positions)
  • Political Science: International Politics - PSC 116 (1 position)
  • Sociology: General Sociology - SOC 100 (3 positions)
  • Women's Studies: Introduction to Women's Studies - WMS 150 (1 position)

Qualifications

  • College Senior Status (90 credits earned) as of June 2009 required.
  • BA/BS strongly preferred.
  • Previous teaching or tutoring experience strongly preferred, especially with varied racial and ethnic populations.

Responsibilities

  • Small group instructional/review sessions of specific, syllabus driven content material.
  • Integration of content specific learning strategies into tutorial sessions.
  • Integration of self-management techniques reflective of course syllabus into tutorial sessions.
  • Close monitoring of individual student's management of course work.
  • On-going assessment of individual student's academic performance.
  • Assessment of individual academic needs, and ability to develop learning plans to address those needs.

Format

  • Tutor Training provided the first Sunday of the Program
  • Tutoring is Sunday through Wednesdays from 6 to 9 pm (please note exceptions under DATES AND HOURS below)
  • Each tutor has an assigned classroom
  • Tutorial groups consist of 5-10 students
  • Groups meet at 6, 7, and 8 pm for 50 minutes.
  • Written Evaulations of students are only required where consistent problems need to be addressed with the input of core staff.

Dates and Hours

  • Mandatory Staff Orientation: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 9 am to 4 pm
  • June 28 through July 29: Sundays through Wednesdays, 6 pm to 9 pm
  • Note the Following Exceptions:
    • Tutor Meeting 1: Sunday, June 28, 2:30 pm - 5:45 pm
    • Tutor Meeting 2: Sunday, July 12, 4:00 pm - 5:45 pm
    • July 4th Holiday Schedule: Tuesday July 7 - Thursday July 9, 6 pm to 9 pm

Salary

  • $1900 / five weeks; this includes compensation for staff orientation and meetings.
