GRADUATE ASSISTANTS UNITED - American Association of University Professors Graduate Assistants United

Join AAUP

As a graduate assistant at URI, you are entitled to the RI Laws that govern collective bargaining and the negotiated agreement between the GAU and the Board of Governors. For that, you are assessed an agency fee that is automatically withdrawn from your paychecks. The amount of the fee is set by the GAU.

In 2001, during the organizing drive to attain recognition from the State Labor Relations Board that enforces collective bargaining rights, the student organizers chose the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) as their national association. The AAUP was chosen because of the organizations core principles of academic freedom, faculty governance and tenure protection. Because you are a graduate assistant does not mean you are automatically a member of the association and support the AAUP's mission.

In order to become a member of the Association, individuals must sign a membership card (see the link below) and send it to the GAU office. It does not cost you any more to become a member. A portion of that which is deducted from your paycheck will automatically forward to the national organization.

Membership allows you to stay current with the issues that effect higher education through the publication Academe. You will also receive additional benefits as negotiated by the larger organization. Please visit their web site at www.aaup.org for additional information.
