What is the AAUP?
The American Association of University Professors was founded in 1915 and is the nation's largest association of college and university faculty. The association has a long history of protecting academic freedom, tenure, and shared governance with university adminitration. The association has been a leader in recent changes in higher education, issueing policy statements regarding graduate assistants and the increase in the number of part-time faculty.

What is the GAU?
The Graduate Assistants United is the chapter of the AAUP that represents the nearly 600 graduate research, teaching and administrative support assistants at the University. Certified in 2003, the GAU represents the collective interests of all graduate assistants in negotiating a contract and protecting their employment rights.

Does the GAU represent me even if I am not a member?
Yes. In order for you to become a memeber of the association, you have to sign a membership card. The same amount of dues is deducted from your paycheck. When an assistant signs a card, a portion of the dues is forward to the national association for membeship.

Why should I become a member?
Many times, the strength of an organization is determined by its number of members. It is an indicator that the members of the association believe in the principles of the organization and support its efforts. The GAU has worked hard in gaining respect for the work the graduate assistants perform and in securing a contract that states their rights and responsibilities. The GAU is not only continuously looking to sign new members, it is looking for leaders to step forward, assume officer positions, and make decisions on behalf of the membership.
What has the GAU done for me recently?,br/> The GAU has recently secure an agreement with the Board of Governors that will extend the employment relationship until the end of the 2007 academic year. There were modest gains in salaries and with additional parking privileges and a clause that allows for a 6 week paid maternity leave.
