NYU graduation action this Thursday , May 11, 2006 We here at NYU are very excited about our fantastic action on April 27, where we once again announced majority support for GSOC and nearly 60 people were arrested in an act of peaceful disobedience calling on the administration to negotiate. Nearly 50 GSOCers were arrested along with AAUP president and president-elect Jane Buck and Cary Nelson and representatives of PSC at CUNY, GSEU at Columbia, GESO at Yale, and GET-UP at UPenn. Thanks to all the CGEUers who were there! This Thursday, May 11, is NYU's graduation, and we will be there to again call for negotiations. The university-wide graduation takes place in Washington Square Park from 10:30 to noon; we will have a rally less than a block away, which will kick of at 11:30, just as graduation is ending. We'll be on Sullivan Street just south of Washington Square Park (a couple of blocks west of Bobst Library); the rally will feature GSOCers, undergraduate supporters, AFL-CIO president John Sweeney, UAW Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Bunn, Transport Workers Union Local 100 president Roger Toussaint, UFT president Randi Weingarten, NY State AFL-CIO president Dennis Hughes, and a band from Local 802 of the musicians' union. A flyer for the event is attached. We feel that it is very important to be there as the university marks the end of what has been a very difficult year at NYU, both to remind the university community that our conflict continues, and to call on the administration to negotiate with GSOC to prevent another year of conflict on campus. If you or other members of your local can attend, or if you'd like more information, please let me know at brenda.carter@yaleunions.org. In solidarity, Brenda |
