GAU Supports URI Student for Social Change
The URI Students for Social Change, an affiliate of United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS), hosted a northeast regional conference that included representatives from Smith College, Boston College, Cornell University and UMASS Amherst on November 10-12, 2006 at URI.

The purpose of the conference was to strategize about the three core campaigns of the USAS: Ethical Contracting, International Solidarity and Campus Community Solidarity; attend skill-building workshops about Communicating with Administrators, Education through Media, Fundraising, Building Effective Coalitions, etc; and many other topics.

Conference attendees heard from wage workers in Providence who have worked in subpar conditions and also from a local organization, Fuerza Laboral, that assists workers in improving such conditions. They had many successful leadership training activities, such as presentations on setting goals for implementing the Designated Suppliers Program and a simulation about running a college activist group effectively. In all, the weekend was considered a great success.
