URI GRADUATE STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS

RI NSF EPSCoR CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR URI GRADUATE STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS

The NSF RI-EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) program has funds for five Graduate Fellowships at URI (starting in June or September of 2008).

Support will cover stipend, tuition and fees for one year. Students have the option of requesting support for summer 2008 through spring semester 2009 or for fall semester 2008 through summer 2009. (Continued support is contingent upon RI EPSCoR being renewed).

We now announce a competition for these five fellowships.

While health related projects might be considered, preference will be given for projects that are traditionally funded by NSF (National Science Foundation) as other funding sources are available for NIH-related research. More specifically, the applications should address the applicability to the main objectives of the RI-EPSCoR award (see below).

The Deadline for applications for these Fellowships is 4:30 PM on MARCH 10, 2008.

Listed below are the guidelines and requirements for the application.

If you have any questions or if you need additional information, please contact David Smith, Associate Dean at the Graduate School of Oceanography (4-6172, dcsmith@uri.edu) or Babette Allina at the RI-EPSCoR Office on the Kingston Campus (4-7080, babette@uri.edu).

GUIDELINES for Graduate Fellowships through the Rhode Island EPSCoR Program:

The Rhode Island EPSCoR award will fund graduate training/research (M.S. or Ph.D.) that supports the goals of the RI EPSCoR proposal.

A primary goal of the EPSCoR program is to enhance the research competitiveness of institutions and individual researchers in the state of Rhode Island.

The two main research foci of the RI EPSCoR program are 1) Marine Life Sciences, and 2) Genomics and Proteomics.

To enhance research competitiveness, the EPSCoR program will foster interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary studies in these two areas that engage students and researchers in collaborative projects between participating Universities and Colleges in Rhode Island. A further goal is to foster education and outreach that helps make these scientific resources more available to scientists throughout the state.

With these goals in mind, applications for Graduate Fellowships will be considered that demonstrate clear connections with the following criteria:

1) Graduate research focusing on marine life sciences, genomics, proteomics, or the interface between these disciplines.

2) Research projects that will increase the competitiveness of future research proposals to NSF in these areas, and explicit plans to submit such proposals.

3) A strong inter- or multi-disciplinary component to the research. Collaborative projects among URI and other institutions within the state are also encouraged

Selection of URI EPSCoR Graduate Fellows:

Applications are not restricted to US citizens or permanent residents. Applications may be submitted by graduate students who are currently enrolled and in good standing in any department within the University of Rhode Island.

An application package consists of a copy of the student's current CV (2 page maximum), a description of proposed research (4 page maximum for narrative, tables, figures plus 1 page of references), and a letter of support for the student and his/her research proposal from the their major professor or temporary advisor. This letter should also establish that resources and facilities are available to enable the student to carry out the research work they are proposing. Please also specify whether you will require in-state or out-of-state tuition and your appropriate stipend level. Students who have had RI EPSCoR support in the past are eligible to apply for continued support. Applications for continued support must also include a brief (1-2 page) progress report and their proposal should specifically justify continued funding.

All nomination materials are to be submitted as electronic files in pdf format to Dan Carrigg in the URI EPSCoR Office (dcarrigg@uri.edu) 874-2473.

The Selection Committee will be composed of at least six disinterested faculty members with wide representation from among graduate programs and be chaired by the URI EPSCoR Graduate Director, Scott Nixon, or his designee.

Evaluation criteria will include relevance of proposed research to the EPSCoR goals, academic and research excellence, and potential for success.

Students selected via the above process and their graduate program director will receive a letter notifying them of their selection.

They will receive an appointment as a Research Assistant from their department during the period of their support on the EPSCoR grant.

Late or incomplete nominations will not be considered for 2008/09 support.
