Letter from Membership Committee Dear Graduate Assistants, I hope your semester is off to a good start. For the coming school year, the Graduate Assistants United (GAU) would like to remind grads that they need to fill out GAU membership cards to have voting privileges in matters regarding their contract (which is negotiated by the GAU). Membership to the GAU is automatic for GA's but in order to have a more firm voice and complete individual voting rights, each GA must sign one of our membership cards. Full membership comes at NO extra cost to you. A MEMBERSHIP CARD IS LOCATED IN THE BULLETINS LINK ON THE HOME PAGE AND CAN BE MAILED IN TO THE GAU OFFICE. Also, each department has the opportunity to be represented in the GAU by a "steward." GAU stewards disseminate information to the rest of the graduate assistants in their department and relay concerns back to the GAU. Stewards advocate for the rest of their departments' GA's by keeping tabs on grievances and issues with assistantships. Stewards are required to attend 2 meetings throughout the semester, and are compensated for their time and effort. If you are interested in filling this position for your department, please contact Amy Maas, the GAU vice president (amy.maas@gmail.com) with your name, department, and email address. Our meetings this semester will be the first Thursday of each month (specifically Oct. 2, Nov. 6, and Dec. 4 times and locations TBA). There will also be a stewards meeting October 15th at 1-2pm in Roosevelt hall to orient you with the position of steward. Whether or not you are voting member, the GAU stands up for the rights of every graduate assistant, so please feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns, or issues that you may have. You can reference our website (www.uri.edu/gau) or email Amy Maas, VP. Thank you for your time, we hope to hear from you soon.
