Advising Programs for Student Athletes
Mission Statement

The mission of the Academic Support Services for Student-Athletes is to provide student athletes with the resources needed for achieving academic success.  Our services are designed to foster responsibility and enthusiasm for learning and emphasize the university's commitment to graduation.

We realize the dedication required of varsity athletes and work to ensure that athletes are not penalized academically because of their athletic obligations.

Our services supplement the academic support provided by the faculty advisers to whom all students are assigned and with whom students should meet at least once a semester to discuss degree requirements and academic opportunities.

While we adhere to all NCAA requirements, our primary focus is to encourage students to reach their academic potential in a major of their choice. Eligibility issues are forwarded to our Compliance Officer; we are not to be considered experts on eligibility.

Our dealings with students are confidential.  Discussions are limited to the athletes' academic circumstances and are shared only with those within the university who demonstrate a "need to know."

While we make every effort to communicate openly with coaches, it is important to stress that our primary concern is for the academic well being of student athletes.  We work with, not for, the coaches.  At times we may need to take a stand in support of academic integrity which may be in conflict with a coach's wishes.
