Course Requirements
Attendance
The single most important factor in your performance in this course will be your attendance. Since many of you will be traveling and competing this fall, I will make accommodations for your travel schedule. However, as per URI policy, it is your responsibility to notify me at least one week prior to the travel date. Also, if your team doesn't depart until after 9:30am on a class day, you will be expected to attend class that day. Unacceptable classroom behavior will not be tolerated.
Grading
Your final grade will be based upon the following:
| Daily Quizzes (10 best x 5 pts) | 50 points |
| Community Service | 15 points |
| Project | 30 points |
| Instructor Meetings | 5 points |
| TOTAL POINTS | 100 points |
| A = 96 or greater | A- = 90-95 | B+ = 87-89 |
| B = 83-86 | B- = 80-82 | C+ = 77-79 |
| C = 73-76 | C- = 70-72 | D+ = 65-69 |
| D = 60-64 | F = less than 60 |
Daily Quizzes
In order to promote promptness and attendance, a short quiz will be handed out each morning at 8:00am and must be returned by 8:05am. The quizzes will generally cover assigned reading and/or material covered in the previous class meeting. There will be a total of 12 quizzes and you will be graded on your best 10 scores. Each quiz is worth 5 points, so the quizzes will be worth half your grade in this course. On some days, the quiz will take the form of a short take-home assignment that will be assigned during the prior class and must be returned by 8:05am.
An important component of your URI 101 experience is participation in a community service project. Your participation in this project is worth 20% of your course grade. We will provide you with detailed information about the class' community service project.
One of the tasks that you must master at URI is researching and writing papers. This project will take you through the steps of writing an abbreviated research paper. You will be asked to select a topic--I'd suggest something related to your sport or a favorite hobby--and get it approved by me. You will then research the topic, write an annotated bibliography, and submit a short paper. All three parts of the project must be typed or computer-generated using standard size fonts (10- or 12-point) and standard margins (1 to 1.25 inch).
Part I, Library research (Due 12 noon, September 29): For Part I of the project, you need to research your topic at the library. You need to submit a paragraph describing your topic as well as a list of three (3) relevant sources. Your sources must include at least one book and one journal/periodical. You must attach a photocopy of the titlepage of any books and the first page of any journal/periodical articles.
Part II, Annotated Bibliography (Due 12 noon, October 13): For Part II of the project, you need to submit a paragraph for each of your three sources describing the relevance of that source to your topic.
Part III, Paper (Due 4:00pm, Nov 3): For Part III, you must submit a 3-4 page paper on your topic.
